NYS DMV Online Status Check of Vehicle Titles and Liens
The following Tip of the Week provides information for both Dealers and Auction Houses.
MESSAGE FOR DEALERS
Please be aware that a paper lien release from the lender may not need to accompany a New York State title. If no paper lien release is present, the lien may have been released electronically. If the lien was released electronically, a printout from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles online status check of vehicle titles and liens should accompany the title when submitting paperwork for vehicle registration. The status of a lien can be verified by accessing the following URL:
https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/how-check-title-or-lien-status
The status check service displays the information below, and it accurately reflects what is officially entered in DMV’s records:
- The date the title was issued by DMV
- The number of liens (if any)
- The name and address of the lienholder(s)
Note this service does not display any personal information about the vehicle owner or registrant.
In order to perform an online title lien status check, the following information must be provided:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Vehicle model year
- Vehicle make (Refer to the title certificate. Enter a maximum of 5 letters (for example, GMC, SAAB or CHEVR), or 4 letters separated by one slash mark (for example, HA/DA for Harley Davidson and ME/BE for Mercedes Benz).
