Mobile ID – for VERIFI Message
New York’s Mobile ID (MiD) is now available to New Yorkers, and it may help your dealerships protect against fraud. MiD is a trusted, state-issued form of identification that contains all the attributes found on a physical driver license. It also allows you to check the validity and status of a buyer’s driver license in real time.
MiD is not simply a picture of a driver license on a phone. Instead, MiD is a highly secure digital version of a state-issued ID that can only be verified with a MiD reader, such as a free verifier app.
To verify a MiD, the MiD holder will click the “Share Identity” button in the app. This displays a QR code that MiD verifiers scan with their own smartphone or tablet using a verifier app. The QR code is read using Bluetooth on a secure, encrypted channel between the two devices. Verifying with MiD doesn’t require an internet connection.
When you check a MiD this way, an encrypted key signature lets you know the Mobile ID was issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and can be trusted. It will also show if the ID is not issued by NYS, or if it is expired, suspended, or revoked.
